EMU Theater presents: “North Star”, Written by Gloria Bond Clunie and Directed by Wallace Bridges
Relia, an African-American girl, searches for her personal space to shine in a society intent on keeping her in the shadows. Set against the backdrop of the 1960’s North Carolina civil rights struggles, Relia’s parents clash about whether to warn her of, or shield her from escalating racial violence. Relia in turn strives to stay true to her own inner light while confronting, head on, the harshness of the world. With this, Clunie offers audiences a profound glimpse into the power of personal choice. North Star received the AATE’s Distinguished Play Award, Chicago’s JEFF Award for Best New Play, and the Theodore Ward Prize for African American Playwriting.
Recommended for ages 12+
