Each week Ann Arbor with Kids is profiling a different playground in the Ann Arbor area including Ann Arbor, Saline, Ypsilanti, Dexter, etc. Today we are profiling the playground at Island Park.
Island Park
Island Park is a small park along the Huron River in Ann Arbor. The main park is on an island in the Huron River with walking trails and pavilions between the banks of the river and Island Drive.
Location: 1420 Island Dr, Ann Arbor, MI 48105
Unique Features: Island Location, river access
Swings: Yes, two baby swings, two standard swings
Surface: Mulch
Bathrooms: Yes. They aren’t on the island, but are near the north parking lot
Shade: The island has lots of trees, although the structure is fairly sunny.
Pavilion: Yes, there are pavilions near the parking lots before crossing to the island and a Greek Revival style shelter on the island.
Sports Fields: No. The Fuller Park fields are across the river via a path, but their fields require a permit.
Walking Trails: Yes, there are paved paths from the parking lots to the island, around the island, and a wooden bridge to Fuller Park (although no path once you reach Fuller Park)
Parking: 2 Parking Lots on Island Drive.
Island Park Playground Review
Island Park has a nice small playground. In addition to the structure which offers several slides, there are ground level activities and bouncers.
My 11 year old, was too tall for the monkey bars, but that didn’t stop her from taking a turn on the bouncers.
Island Park connects to Fuller Park via a bridge over the river. Fuller Park was the subject of last week’s Playground Profile. Island Park is a great playground to visit if you are at Fuller Park for a sports game. It is closer to some of the fields than the Fuller Park Playground.
