Summer in Ann Arbor is a great time for fresh cherries. In the Ann Arb2or area, cherry season is typically right around Fourth of July – sometimes a week before, sometimes right after. The cherry season can overlap with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
Cherry season is not looking very promising this year. Last frosts damaged the blossoms at many farms and will limit crops. We will continue to update through the season.
Ann Arbor Cherry Picking Options
Michigan is well know for its cherries. Northern Michigan, particularly the Traverse City area is known for its sweet cherries. They hold the National Cherry Festival in early July.
There are no cherry picking in Ann Arbor itself. However, there are several cherry u-pick farms near us that are perfect for picking cherries locally. Typically, some farms offer sweet cherry picking near us, some offer tart cherry picking, and some offer both.
You can also find local fresh cherries at farmers markets or the grocery store.

Cherry Picking Tips
Cherry picking is a family friendly activity. The firm cherries are much easier for young children to pick than softer berries. Even at 3, my daughter had a great time.
Spicer Orchards has both sour pie cherries and sweet cherries available for picking. They have a pitting machine for the tart cherries that is fun for the kids to watch. They have a new pitter for 2025.
The cherry season is short. Be sure check with the farm for current conditions before making the trip.
What to Bring:
- Dress for the weather. The week we picked was chilly, so we wore jeans.
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Water – make sure to stay hydrated
- Bring a container or use one of theirs. Spicer charges $1 for a pail to use while picking. Wasem has no information on picking containers. I know we usually buy bags for apple picking.
- Cash. Some farms only accept cash or check. Others take cards, but it can still be helpful to have cash for deposits on picking containers.
