Frugal Fun Summer in Ann Arbor doesn’t have to empty your wallet — some of the best summer activities in Ann Arbor are totally free or quite frugal (under $5/person). Whether you’re planning the full summer, working around camps, looking for a cool spot to splash, or planning a fun afternoon with visiting grandparents, this guide to Free Summer Fun in Ann Arbor has you covered.

From playgrounds and movies to outdoor concerts, museums, and even splashing adventures, you’ll find that some of the best summer memories don’t cost much.

We have started to update our list for summer 2026. We will be updating as new information is released.

Getting Wet – Creeks, Lakes, Splash Pads, & Pools

It’s summer! Of course it’s the perfect time to dive in to a pool, hit the splash pad, or visit the lake. Fortunately there are a few free and frugal options for getting wet.

Ann Arbor has not had a free splash pad. BUT, that is about to change. One is being added to Bicentennial Park (formerly called Southeast Area park). I have driven by a few times and it is starting to take shape. Hopefully, it will open in summer 2026. Even without the splash pad there are plenty of places to get wet with the Huron River and other creeks in town There is also a free splash pad in Milan.

Ann Arbor Parks for Splashing

While there are plenty of great pool options in and around Ann Arbor, warm temperatures can happen before they open for the summer or after they close. Fortunately, there are several parks and playgrounds that have creeks, rivers, or lakes that can be visited year round. This list includes only locations without a vehicle admission […]

There are several lake beaches near Ann Arbor. While most of them have a daily or annual vehicle admission fee, the daily fee is less than $5/person as long as there are at least 2 people in the car. You can also get a free daily vehicle pass for select state and Huron-Clinton Metroparks using the library’s Michigan Activity Pass.

The Ann Arbor pools see a price increase for 2026. $5/person threshold we set for frugal activities. They are $6/child (4-17) or senior (60+) and $8/adult (18-59). However, if you purchase a punch pass, it can work out to less than $5/person (25 punches is $5/visit, more punches are less per visit). 2025 details: Ypsilanti’s Rutherford Pool is under our frugal threshold at $4/youth or $5/adult.

The Best Ann Arbor Outdoor Pools to Visit in 2026

Summer and the outdoor swim season is almost over. Find the best Ann Arbor pools that you can visit today and all summer long. The only public pool open before Memorial Day is Fuller Park which opens for the 2026 season on May 10. With school now starting before Labor Day, pools are cutting their […]

Of course there are plenty of ways to get wet at home! Setup a kiddie pool, run the sprinkler, use whatever containers you have around the house for water guns, playing with toy boats, and more.

Outdoor Play – Playgrounds & Trails

Outdoor play is one of the best free summer activities near Ann Arbor. We have so many great playgrounds! Make a plan to try out at least one new to you playground each week.

Ann Arbor Playground Profiles

Are you looking for a new Ann Arbor Playground to visit? Be sure to check out our Ann Arbor Playground Profiles.  If there is one thing that Ann Arbor has in abundance, it is parks. The City of Ann Arbor owns and operates 162 parks. That doesn’t even count Washtenaw County Parks, or parks in Pittsfield Township, Ypsilanti, Dexter, Saline, […]

Go beyond the playground and take a hike through one of the many parks. Check out our list of hikes without playgrounds

Ann Arbor Walks without Playgrounds

This list of Ann Arbor-area hikes and walks skips the playgrounds, so your little explorers can focus on the trail ahead (and you can skip the “just five more minutes” negotiation at the slide). Whether you’re after shaded woods, scenic rivers, or peaceful prairies, these kid-friendly paths make it easy to enjoy the outdoors together. […]

Bike rides are also a great free outdoor activity. Personally I’m in favor of local bike rides where I don’t have to transport the bikes. Growing up, based on where we lived we could ride to a 7-11, comic book shop, or an ice cream shop using bike paths or neighborhood streets.

See A Movie without Breaking the Bank –

While seeing the latest release may not be the most frugal option, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy movies this summer for less.

Both Emagine and Cinemark have summer movie series. The Cinemark Movies are offered on Wednesday and Thursday and cost just $1.75.

Sadly the Emagine Kids Series has doubled in cost from $3 to $6/person and no longer qualify for our Frugal Summer. However, all standard showings are only $5 on Tuesdays for Emagine Rewards members – and you get a free popcorn. We recommend seeing the latest releases on Tuesday as a frugal movie option.

There are also a number of free outdoor summer movies – particularly during Top of the Park in June.
